About

The Trygg Mat Foundation was a Norwegian foundation working on sustainable seafood production. The main focus of the organisation increasingly became illegal fishing and in 2014 it was decided that a new entity, Trygg Mat Tracking (TMT), should be initiated to take on this particular focus. The work of TMT can be found at www.tm-tracking.org. TMT has also taken over the ownership and management of the combined IUU vessel website, www.iuu-vessels.org. TMT is maintaining the webpages of Trygg Mat Foundation for public interest. All contact links from this website will be directed to TMT.

Gunnar Album, founder

The TM Foundation worked on issues concerning ecologically safe food production. For ten years work concentrated on fisheries management and later illegal fishing.

Until 2014 the director of TM Foundation was Gunnar Album, a pioneer in the field of dedicated analysis and tracking of fishing vessels and their owners. Before most others, Gunnar clearly saw the gap in the systematic collection and analysis of fisheries intelligence, and the need for it to be shared, particularly with those countries that did not have the experience to gather and analyze fisheries intelligence, or the resources to manage their fisheries effectively. Gunnar strongly believed in the right of mankind to have access to and benefit from the resources of the oceans, but that this right was also a responsibility that must be carefully managed for the good of all, now and future.

Gunnar’s work was instrumental in highlighting the significant gaps in available information, and his ability to build relationships and cooperation between different agencies was key to getting countries to share information and cooperate on fisheries enforcement actions. His support to government agencies, RFMOs and other relevant bodies directly contributed to effective enforcement actions including the arrest and prosecution of vessels and companies, Interpol Purple Notices, the exposure of forged licensing systems, and many more.

As work increasingly focused on illegal fishing, and particularly supporting developing countries, it was decide that a dedicated organization for this work should be developed. In 2013 Gunnar founded Trygg Mat Tracking (TMT), which provides expert fisheries intelligence analysis to national authorities and relevant international institutions, in support of enforcement actions and broader improvements in fisheries governance. This is achieved through a combination of close cooperation and information sharing with government agencies, through fisheries intelligence gathering and analysis, vessel tracking and the development of technology that assists in the capture of information on fisheries crimes. While TMT works with governments and organisations worldwide, particular focus is on the levels of illegal fishing in and near African waters and assisting coastal African States.

Following Gunnar’s sad passing in September 2014, the team he brought together at TMT were determined to carry on his important work and legacy, and it is in his memory and spirit that we carry out our operations today.
